Wado to those who have made our community garden project a reality!

We would like acknowledge those who have donated funds, materials and time to help us start the Garden project.  It is one more step toward ensuring we are able to respond to our own needs for healthy, culturally adapted Indigenous foods.

Throughout history, Cherokees have always placed a high priority on our relationship with the earth and being good stewards of the land.  Agriculture has always been part of the Cherokee way of life.  Within Cherokee villages, the entire community participated in communal gardening.  The RCCA Community Garden is one way we plan to carry on the traditions and teachings of our ancestors through the spirit of Gadugi.

The Garden project was primarily created in response to the effect the COVID 19 pandemic had on our Nation.  It brought the realization that the principles of food sovereignty is crucial to the future well-being of our citizens.  Through the Garden project, we will:
  • Supply fresh vegetables to elders and citizens in need
  • Sustain the supply of Cherokee heirloom seeds
  • Provide gardening classes to teach best practices for raising our traditional crops
  • Host cultural classes as well as classes on food preservation
